Rev. Jack H. Thiesen

Funeral services for Reverend Jack H. Thiesen, 76, of Norfolk will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church, Norfolk.  Burial will be in New Lutheran Cemetery, Norfolk.  Visitation will be Friday from 3-7 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church   Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

Reverend Thiesen died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Faith Regional Health Services. 

            Jack Hugo Thiesen was born December 3, 1936 in St. Louis, MO the son of Hugo and Marie (Maguire) Thiesen.  He graduated from the Lutheran High School in St. Louis and then attended Junior College and Senior College in Fort Wayne, IN where he received his B.A. Degree.  Jack then enrolled in the Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis and graduated with a Master’s of Divinity Degree on May 30, 1961.

            Jack married Laura Sullivan on April 23, 1960.  Reverend Thiesen’s first installation was September 3, 1962 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Nevada, MO, and also served Faith Lutheran Church in El Dorado Springs, MO.  April 1964 he was named the State Hospital Staff Chaplain for the Nevada State Hospital.

            Jack then served St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bridgeport, Nebraska and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Bayard, Nebraska three years before moving to Norfolk where he accepted the position as Staff Chaplain at the Norfolk Regional Center for the State of Nebraska. He served vacancies in the Northeast Nebraska Area including St. John’s Green Gardens; Immanuel Lutheran Church, Beemer; St. Paul’s Lutheran Church West Point. He also taught Family Life courses at Northeast Nebraska Community College for many years.

After serving for fourteen years he accepted a call to Christ Lutheran Church where he served as an Associate Pastor and worked as a Counselor from 1986 until retiring in 2001.  Reverend Thiesen was currently serving as an Assistant to the Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church. 

            Jack is survived by his wife Laura Thiesen of Norfolk, son Jack and wife Jessica Thiesen of Plymouth, Michigan, and their children Jack III, Michal, and James Thiesen, daughter Teri and her husband Maynard Thompson, and their son Samuel Thompson. 

            He is also survived by his cousins Carol and Ron Moser of Naples, Florida and their children; and Cynthia and Gary Hayes, of Naples Florida and their children. His sisters in-law and brother in-law Helen Sklar; Susan Mintle; Jean Havel; Catherine and Gary Sampson, and multiple nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his Uncle Ulrich and Aunt Cecilia Thiesen.  He was called to God’s service as a young boy, serving God’s family faithfully for all his years. We are reassured of his resurrection in Christ our Lord and Savior through the witness of his life.

 Memorials can be sent to Orphan Grain Train, Grace Lutheran Building Fund, and Concordia Seminary St. Louis to continue God’s work here on earth.
