Carolyn Apland Obituary

Funeral services for Carolyn K. Apland, age 83, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2024, at Northern Heights Baptist Church in Norfolk. Pastor Jim Fleming will officiate.

The funeral service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue, in Norfolk.

Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Clark, South Dakota.

Carolyn died Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Carolyn Kay Apland, the daughter of Milton and Irene (Murray) Hoffman was born on October 26th, 1940, in Watertown, South Dakota. She was raised on the family farm near Clark, South Dakota. She graduated from Clark High School and then received her degree from Huron College. Carolyn married Larry Apland on June 25th, 1960. They were blessed with four children. Their firstborn child, LeRoy, passed away in infancy.

Larry and Carolyn first moved to Norfolk in 1964. Carolyn began working as a secretary at Northeast Community College in The Adult Basic Education Program in 1970. A short time later, she was promoted to Director of the ABE and the ESL Programs. She was also awarded supervisor of the year in 1985. After 31 years, she retired in 2002.

Carolyn was an active member of the Northern Heights Baptist Church. She served in the nursery, the kitchen, Vacation Bible School, and Awana. She also helped with Camp Assurance. After Hurricane Katrina, Carolyn assisted with disaster relief in Louisiana. Carolyn found purpose in volunteering for many different causes such as: Orphan Grain Train, The Mission, The Community Pantry, and Meals on Wheels.

She loved spending precious time with family, traveling with her sister, Judy, and socializing with her friends. She also enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing, Nebraska Football, and spending her winters in South Padre Island, TX.

Carolyn is survived by her children and spouses, Brenda (Dennis) Hoff of Pierce, NE, Michael (Robi) Apland of Spearfish, SD, and Darin Apland of Lincoln, NE; brother, Wayne (Karen) Hoffman of Rapid City, SD; sister, Judy Smith of Brookings, SD; grandchildren, Brett (Claire) Hoff, Jordan Hoff (Ashley Mynatt), and Danielle (Corey) Kramper, Kendra (Tyler) Bos, Marissa Apland (Drake Anshutz), Scout and Hopper Apland; and great-grandchildren, Alaina, Oliver, and Everlee Kramper, and Carson Bos.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; and infant son, LeRoy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Northern Heights Baptist Church or to the family for future designation.
