Funeral services for Judene K. Mewis, age 78, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Reverend Cal Kapels will officiate, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk.
The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Home for Funerals, 1203 W. Norfolk Avenue, in Norfolk.
Judene died Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, Nebraska.
Judene Kay was born March 6, 1946, to Vernon and Irene (Kurpgeweit) Hausmann in the rural Pierce area. She attended school in Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1964, and attending Norfolk Business College. After college, Judene worked at the phone company in Norfolk.
On March 12, 1966, Judene married Jim Mewis. The couple moved out to California where she worked for Raytheon. While in California, Judene and Jim were blessed with a daughter, Kandee, and decided to move back to Nebraska to raise their family. Upon her return home, Judene opened an in-home daycare. The couple was further blessed with a son, Jesse.
Judene worked various jobs including the Stanton Courthouse, Dale’s Electronics, and eventually retiring from the Regional Center.
She enjoyed her time at home and coffee dates with friends, but above all else, Judene was devoted to her family. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and siblings. Her family will remember her gentle and loving smile, and her generous nature. She was always ready with a kind word.
Judene is survived by her children, Kandee (Gary) Wendt and Jesse Mewis; grandchildren, Hunter and Hailey Mewis and Korbee and Karly Wendt; and step-grandchildren, Kym Wendt and Krys (Jesse) Magsamen; sisters, Sharlyn (Eldon) Grashorn and Pam (Bob) Anderson; brothers, Gregg Hausmann and Steve Hausmann; brother-in-law, Keith (Irene) Mewis, and sister-in-law, Jan Reese.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim Mewis; her father-in-law, Thurston Mewis; mother-in-law, Dolores Willers; sister, Shelley Hausmann; brother, Dennis Hausmann; step-grandchild, Wade Wendt; brother-in-law, Vern Reese; and sister-and-brother-in-law, Jeanette Reese and her husband Lawrence.
