Helen L. (Ruhnke) Schmidt

Funeral services for Helen L. Schmidt, 103, of Norfolk will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church, Norfolk.  Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Norfolk.  Visitation will be 1 hr prior to the service at the church. Home for Funerals, is in charge of Arrangements.              

            Helen died Friday, February 9, 2018 at Stanton Health Center.

            Helen was born September 20, 1914, to Charles and Martha (Keinhoff) Ruhnke near Troy, KS. Helen was baptized October 18, 1914, and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Wathena, KS. Helen grew up near Troy, KS and attended rural school and one year of parochial school there.

            On August 11, 1934, Helen married Victor Schmidt in Wathena, KS. They moved to Norfolk in 1936. Helen worked at The Madison Hotel and J. C. Penny for many years.

            Helen was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was very active in the church and was a member of the Ladies Aid, the choir, was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Women’s Missionary League and she delivered meals on wheels for many years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, embroidery and traveling. Helen traveled all over the United States and to Europe several times.

            Helen is survived by a son Richard Schmidt of Sussex, England, 2 daughters, Marilyn (Ron) Belanger of Glendale, AZ, Carol (Melvin) Jensen of Norfolk, 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1979, a son Robert, a granddaughter, 2 grandsons, and her 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

            In Lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church or Orphan Grain Train.
