Mass of Christian Burial for Velma M. Gries, 90, Lincoln, will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. Reverend Scott Schilmoeller will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk. Visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary at Home for Funerals.
She passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Nebraska Medicine in Bellevue.
Velma Maxine was born on April 2, 1927 to her parents Joseph and Lydia (Pflanz) Allar in Carroll, Nebraska. She obtained her teaching certificate at Wayne State College.
Velma married Gaylord Gries on October 15, 1951 in Randolph, Nebraska.
Velma taught school and worked in laundry and housekeeping at Lutheran Community Hospital. She retired from the hospital in 1989. In retirement, Velma babysat many neighborhood children.
She was a member of the Altar Society at Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, and baking.
Velma is survived by her children Randy (Tammy) Gries of Lincoln, Gayla (Steve) Jerrell of Bellevue, and Kirk Gries of St. Joseph, MO, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and sister Rosella (John) Meuret of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gaylord, parents, sister Marilyn Hochstein and brother-in-law Bob Hochstein.
