Vera P. (Bernt) Vogel

Mass of Christian Burial for Vera P. Vogel, 88, Battle Creek, will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 5, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Battle Creek.  Reverend Mike Malloy will be the celebrant.  Inurnment will be 4:30 p.m. Monday in the parish cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. at the church. Steffen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

She passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Vera Pauline was born on March 26, 1929 to her parents Joseph and Elizabeth (Wewel) Bernt in Stuart, Nebraska.  She grew up in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School. Earning her teaching certificate, she taught in a one room school house till her marriage.

Vera married Edward Vogel on June 5, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart.

They moved to Newport and ranched until moving southwest of Battle Creek in 1962 where they began dairy and crop farming. From 1980 till 1988, she owned and managed Thread Wear, a dry goods mercantile store in Battle Creek.  In 1982, she moved into Battle Creek and later began working as a dietary aide at the Community Pride Care Center until retiring in 2007. Vera was commonly seen at the farmer’s market with her Grandma’s Jams and Jellies products.

She loved to cook, read, quilt, sew, and bake in her free time. Vera was an active member of the Altar Society and enjoyed teaching CCD. She was a part of the Battle Creek Lions Club for a total of 30 years, 20 as a Lioness and 10 as a Lion. Vera also loved square dancing with the Single Wheelers.

Vera is survived by her children Joe Vogel, Edna Acton, Renee (Roy) Schaecher, Denise (John) Seawell, James Vogel (Alice Malone), Wayne (Lisa) Vogel, Lois Vogel, Barbra Harvey, Laura Marks, and Erik Vogel, 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, sister Leona (Rex) Dowden and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by Joycelyn Vogel and Becky Estep who she loved as her own daughters.

Vera is preceded in death by her husband, daughter Joyce Vogel, sister Irene Copeland, brother Leo Bernt and sister in-law Gloria Bernt.

Memorials requested to the Battle Creek Lions Club or Orphan Grain Train.
