Arla passed away Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Heritage at Fountain Point assisted living, receiving hospice care for heart failure.
Arla Mae was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Norfolk, the oldest of four children of Herbert and Rosella (Pitzke) Deitloff. Arla was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School and Norfolk Public Schools, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1949. On July 8, 1951, she married Marvin Konopasek at St. Paul’s. They were married for 65 years and had four children: Kathie, twins Richard and Randall, and Nanci.
Arla and her husband owned and operated Double K Restaurant/Catering and King’s Ballroom and developed Kings Entertainment Center. Arla filled various roles including bookkeeping, ticket sales and any role that needed filling as a caterer, doing it all with efficiency and a smile. She and Marv could glide across the dance floor, enjoying big band music and Marv’s favorite polkas. In the early years, her fresh homemade pies were a daily treat at their first business, the Goodie Shoppe, in downtown Norfolk.
She was involved in her children’s activities as a 4-H leader teaching baking, cooking and leadership skills. Arla was on the Board of Directors and a chaperone with Norfolk’s Crimson Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, where she traveled with and cooked for the group. She slept wherever the kids slept, including many gymnasium floors.
Arla was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, singing in the choir as a young woman and being a long-time member of the Ladies Aid, serving at various times as president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. She was a member of multiple card clubs over the years and continued to meet with some of her high school class members for weekly coffee and a monthly lunch until a few years ago. Arla found new friends in recent years at Heritage at Fountain Point.
She is survived by daughters, Kathie (Blane) Osterman of Lincoln and Nanci (Veronica Papstein) of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Liela Konopasek of Norfolk; six grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah) Osterman, Mandi (Jason) Konopasek Peters, Liz (Derek) Osterman Drews, Katie (Justin) Konopasek Zila, Daniel Konopasek, and Maci Konopasek; six great-grandchildren, Paxton, Jaslyn and Kendell Peters, Jaxson and Kayden Zila, and Apollo Drews; sister, Sharon (Val) Zohner, of Norfolk; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Arla was preceded by her parents; husband, Marv, in 2017; infant son, Randall; son, Richard in 2019; brother, DeLayne Deitloff and his wife, Betty, sister, Della O’Gorman and her husband, Jim; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
The family is thankful for the caring and professional staff at Fountain Point and the residents who became Arla’s friends, and staff of St. Croix Hospice.
