Betty Papstein Obituary

Funeral services for Betty A. Papstein, age 96, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Reverend Robert Wiest will officiate, with burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk.

The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.

Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the church.

Betty passed away Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Betty Ann Papstein, daughter of Melvin and Blanche (Carrico) Nicholas, was born April 1, 1929, in Norfolk, Nebraska. She attended school in Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk High School in May of 1947. She attended Nebraska Teacher’s College in Wayne.

On October 24, 1947, Betty was united in marriage with Marvin Papstein at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. The couple lived in several locations across Nebraska before settling in Norfolk. They were blessed with seven children.

Betty worked at various jobs in Norfolk over the years, including teaching at Sunny Meadow Country School, as a Nurse’s Aide, Activities Coordinator at St. Joseph’s Nursing and Rehabilitation and Care Center, and later as a para at Jefferson Elementary.

A born caregiver, Betty was a patient, devoted mother to her children and was famous in her family for the comforting home-cooked meals she provided. She enjoyed baking, especially cakes and cookies. She had a great love for animals both domestic and wild, with a special place in her heart for cats.

Betty was involved with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and served as treasurer of the Nancy Gary Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a longtime member at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, serving and feeding many throughout her years with their Ladies’ Aid.

She is survived by her children, David (Linda) Papstein of Norfolk, Rosemary (Mike) Hammerstrom of Sioux City, Pam (Tom) Burney of Norfolk, Bette Wiehn of Lincoln, Alison Beed of Norfolk, Bill Papstein of Norfolk; and daughter-in-law, Barb Papstein of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin in 1996; son, Todd; son-in-law, Remi Wiehn; brother, William Nicholas; grandson, Jason Beed; and great-grandson, Kellan James Conyers.
