Brian Murphy

Brian W. Murphy died Friday, July 12, 2024, at his home in Norfolk. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Cheryl Murphy; sisters, Shelly and Mindy Murphy; niece Alexa Easley; and nephews, Mitchell and Drew Easley.

Brian was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lela and Floyd Murphy, Darlene and Orlen Volquardsen, and Dillard Dederman.  

Brian was born on January 12, 1978. He graduated from Madison High School and attended Midland Lutheran College. Brian had a passion for music, flying, parachuting, and base jumping. Perhaps his greatest loves were his dog Petey and his late dog Lebowski.

Brian took great pride in passing the written portion of the test towards his pilot's license in 2009. As he practiced for the flight portion of his license, he bought a plane. Brian was at greatest peace in the air. Brian was an avid parachutist and base jumper which he experienced in several states. He spoke fondly about those he met with similar interests, especially those in Twin Falls, ID at the Snake River BASE Academy, those he met skydiving in Eloy, AZ, and the group of friends he made through the Lincoln Sport Parachute Club in Weeping Water, NE.

Sadly, on Brian's 304th jump, he suffered a parachuting accident near the Norfolk Regional Airport, His family is eternally grateful to those who came to his rescue that evening on July 9, 2009. Three days prior to his passing, Brian sent his family a text remarking that he was celebrating his 15th anniversary of being brought back to life.

For those who knew Brian, his laughter and smile could light up a room. He was that person who would give you the shirt off his back and ask what more he could do. He was always concerned about the most vulnerable, especially animals. He could often be seen on weekends feeding fie squirrels and ducks at Ta Ha Zouhka Park.

His family would like to thank everyone in the community who showed Brian grace and friendship as he struggled with communication due to the injuries from his accident. We are especially grateful to Jackie, who brought such happiness to in his final weeks.

At some point in the early hours of July 12, we know Brian crossed Rainbow Bridge and called out Lebowski's name. His family takes heart picturing the look on their faces as they were finally reunited.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Brian's life.
