Clarice Lumsden

Funeral services for Clarice Euvonne (Bernhardt) Lumsden, age 91, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Home for Funerals, 1203 W. Norfolk Avenue, in Norfolk, with a reception following for family and friends at the Norfolk Country Club.

Reverend Terry Buol will officiate, with burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk. 

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Home for Funerals.

Clarice died Sunday, July 21, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Clarice Euvonne (Bernhardt) Lumsden was born November 1, 1932, in Beatrice, Nebraska to Walter J. and Ruth (Darwin) Bernhardt. She graduated from Beatrice High School in 1950. Following graduation, she worked as a Medical Secretary and Medical Assistant for Dr. C. R. Brott.  

She married Henry F. Lumsden, Jr. on April 20, 1952, at the Centenary Methodist Church in Beatrice. Following a four o’clock candlelight wedding service, they went on their honeymoon to Bermuda. They lived in Bermuda for two years where they made their home living by the smallest drawbridge in the world. When they returned from Bermuda, Clarice worked for Beatrice’s Government Soil Conservation Service. Henry and Clarice enjoyed 71 years of marriage together.

Clarice was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Norfolk for 57 years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Beulah Chapter #40, Past President of the Past Matron Club, Past President of Northeast Shrine Nile Club, Past Member of the Norfolk Country Club, and Past Member of the Norfolk Dinner Dance Club.

Clarice was also a volunteer at the Northern Hills School Library. She donated a book on movie star, Robert Taylor. Robert Taylor’s father, Dr. Brugh delivered Clarice on November 1, 1932, in Beatrice.  Clarice also volunteered in the church office at First United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included writing short poems and stories, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, crewel embroidery, crossword puzzles, reading books and the Norfolk Daily News.

She also enjoyed redecorating their French retirement home. She loved collecting angels, Swarovski snowflakes, “just the right” shoes, bells, spoons, and plates. Her motto has always been, “My family comes first.” Clarice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a very caring person. Her child's nickname was “Dolly.” She always told her children and grandchildren, “Be sweet and kind and do your best.”

Clarice is survived by daughter, Dr. Randa Sue (Lumsden) Garden, and son-in-law James Paul Garden of Norfolk; son, Scott Joseph Lumsden, AIA and daughter-in-law Elke Karin (Liewald) Lumsden of Riverside, IL; grandchildren, Jamy Sue Garden of Norfolk, Nikki Jo Garden-Hart (Stephen Hart) of Atlantic Beach, FL, and Ayden Scott Lumsden of Riverside, IL.

The family who preceded Clarice in death include her parents, Walter J. and Ruth (Darwin) Bernhardt; husband, Henry F. Lumsden, Jr.; and sister, Norma (Bernhardt) Kier.

Memorials may be directed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center ICU Department in Omaha who provided Clarice with loving care at the end of her life, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
