Funeral services for Dale Gustav Walter Schellpeper, 86, of Stanton, will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday May 7, 2018 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Stanton. The Rev. Mark D. Reichert will officiate with Shultz-Vogel-Johnson Funeral Home in charge. Burial will be in the Stanton Cemetery.
Visitation will be at St. John's Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 6th from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. under the direction of Shultz-Vogel-Johnson Mortuary in Stanton.
Dale died at the Stanton Health Center on May 1, 2018, after a tenacious battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Norfolk on July 14, 1931 to Gus and Emma (Warneke) Schellpeper. He was baptized on August 2, 1931 at St. John's Lutheran Church, attended Stanton County School District 28 and St. John's Lutheran School, and was confirmed on May 21, 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church.
He graduated from Stanton High School in 1948. He farmed with his father and attended Northeast Nebraska Technical College in Norfolk before enlisting in the US Navy in January 1952. He served aboard the USS Perkins in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during shore bombardment on October 13, 1952, causing progressive hearing impairment. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned to Stanton to run the family farm.
He married L. LaVonne Davidson on August 15, 1954 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Racine, Wisconsin. They lived on the farm for 56 years and raised five children: Brian, Valerie, Susan, Kristine and Timothy. Dale and LaVonne moved to Stanton in 2010 and Dale continued to help on the farm including helping with harvest this past fall.
Dale was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church throughout his life, serving as an elder and on the board of education. He was a member of VFW post 3602 in Stanton. He loved farming and in 1987 he and LaVonne received the Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Farm Family Award for 100 years of consecutive family ownership of the farm. His work ethic, sharp sense of humor, and love of animals will long be remembered.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, LaVonne; son Brian and his wife Paula of Overland Park, KS, daughter Valerie and her husband Boyd Ebberson of Coleridge, NE, daughter Susan and her husband Tim Schnack of Omaha, daughter Kristine Marshall of Minneapolis, son Timothy and his wife Caroline of Stanton; 12 grandchildren: Courtney Schellpeper, Cody (Reshma) Ebberson, Ashley (Brian) Adrianse, Laura Sullivan (Shawn O'Hargan), Erik (Anna) Schnack, Kyle Schnack (Sarah Schroeder), Brandon (Morgan) Ebberson, Erin (Luis) Dietsche, Sarah Schellpeper, Ethan Marshall, Emma Schellpeper, and Alex Schellpeper; 5 great-grandchildren: Wesley and Abigail Adrianse, Lane and Sawyer Schnack, and Ezra Elizabeth Ebberson; sister Lageane and her husband Richard Petersen of Sioux City, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Emma Schellpeper; one sister-in-law; and one brother-in-law.
The family suggests memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church parking lot fund or Stanton High School Foundation directed to agriculture or FFA.
