David Herman Winkelbauer, 86, passed away on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, May 11 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Randolph with burial at the parish cemetery with with Military Rites by Alvin Kessler V.F.W. Post #5545 and American Legion Post #113 of Randolph. Rev. John Andrews will officiate.
Visitation will be held at the church Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Services will be under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Randolph.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Gary J. Frederick, Steve Winkelbauer, Chad Winkelbauer, Brian Winkelbauer, Bradley Winkelbauer, Chris Winkelbauer, Troy Graf, and Heath Winkelbauer.
Honorary Pallbearers will be granddaughters, Dawn Denn, Angie Frederick, Mindy Dahlheim, Teri Winkelbauer, Jennifer Smith, Stephanie Weyenberg, Kerrie Junck, Tina Thelen, Tracy Backhaus, Jeri Gubbels, Shilo Stueckrath, and Mitzi Husby.
David Winkelbauer was born February 19, 1924 to Frank and Othilia (Meyer) Winkelbauer near Randolph in Pierce County. He grew up on a farm west of Randolph. David served in the U.S. Army for 22 months from 1945-1946, spending time in the Phillipines and Korea.
David married Doris Elaine Paulson on January 20, 1947 at St. Jane Frances de Chantel Catholic Church in Randolph. They made their first homes in and around the Randolph area, while farming. In January of 1962 they moved into Randolph and for the next 25 years David owned and operated K-W Grain Co. in Randolph. David lived at their home in Randolph until a brief illness before his death.
David was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a lifetime member of the Alvin Kessler 5545 VFW Post and was a longtime member of the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department. David was a successful businessman and was active in the community. He served on the Randolph City Council and was a member of the Randolph Community Club for many years, including a term as president.
David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a caregiver to his wife for many years. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, gardening, golf, and spending time with his family.
David is survived by seven children and spouses, Barb (Gary) Frederick of Norfolk, Bob (Gloria) Winkelbauer of Randolph, Rosie (Edwin) Backer of Sioux City, IA, Roger (Sharolyn) Winkelbauer of Randolph, Shirley (Randy) Graf of Randolph, Jerry (Joy) Winkelbauer of Randolph, and Jeff (Suzanne Rose) Winkelbauer of Omaha; 20 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; brothers, Vince of Omaha and Louie of Somers, IA, sisters, Dorie Kuhl of Omaha, Florentine Kessler of Humphrey, Mary Ann Van Slyke of Nampa, ID and Elvera Kaiser of Randolph; and many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Doris. His parents, Frank and Othilia Winkelbauer; infant daughter, Margaret; brothers, Sylvester, Arnold, Raymond, and Gail; sisters, LaVern Maslowsky, and Rita Van Slyke.
