Delbert John Mendlik, Sr. was born February 18, 1947, to Dennis and Delores (Ritter) Mendlik, in West Point, Nebraska. He was baptized and grew up in Dodge, Nebraska.
After graduation from high school, Delbert joined the United States Army on April 17, 1966. He was attached to the 5th Army and was stationed in Phuoc Vinh during the Vietnam War. While serving his country as a physical therapist, Delbert was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 60 Device, and a Bronze Service Star. He was honorably discharged on April 17, 1970.
Upon returning home from the service, Delbert married Diane (Voliscka) Hollmann. Together they had three children, Terry, Rhonda, and Yolanda. Delbert and Diane later divorced. He married Tammy Pacas on May 15, 1981, and was blessed with two sons, Delbert, Jr. “DJ” and Timothy.
Delbert worked with his father, Dennis, at Mendlik Plumbing. He loved sports and attended many functions over the years, but he found the most joy in coaching, umpiring, and volunteering as a referee for more than 25 years. Delbert also loved hunting, fishing, polka music, and quilting. He was a loyal customer of JoDean’s in Yankton, enjoying their seafood buffet as frequently as possible. He served as a driver for Stanton Ambulance for several years and spread holiday magic as Sunset Plaza Mall’s Santa Claus.
Delbert was a devoted husband, cherished grandfather, and beloved great-grandfather.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Tammy of Stanton; children, Terry (Heidi) Mendlik of Stanton, Rhonda (Lonnie) Miller of Brunswick, Georgia, Yolanda (Tom) Clinch of Norfolk, DJ Mendlik of Norfolk, and Tim (Shelby) Mendlik of Norfolk; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Duane (Sandy) Mendlik of Wisner and Randy (Ilene) Mendlik of Elkhorn; sisters, Donna Vakiner of Snyder, Janet Krienert of Scribner, and Cheryl (Mike) Vacha of Hooper; stepbrother, Randy (Barb) Belsky of David City; stepsister, Luanne (Randy) Ortmeier of West Point; and stepsister-in-law, Linda Belsky.
