Dwain Keith passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026, in Norfolk, Nebraska. His battle with dementia over the past several years took away his memory, but never his spirit, the twinkle in his eyes, or his sense of humor. Despite his failing health and memory, he continued to make those around him laugh to the very end and could find humor in everyday life circumstances. His recent hobbies included flirting with his nurses and keeping every bird in Norfolk well fed.

Dwain Keith Volwiler was born July 14, 1940, at his family’s farm outside Winside, Nebraska. He served in the Air National Guard from 1962-1963 and again 1968-1969 and was stationed at Clovis, New Mexico, where he was on the rifle team and took second in a national competition. He started his 30-year career with Vulcraft in Norfolk at the bottom and worked his way up to production manager, where he finished his career in Brigham City, Utah, before retiring in 1998 and moving back to Nebraska.

Dwain met the love of his life, Ellie, through mutual friends on a blind date, and they were married a few months later. Together, they had four children. Of all his accomplishments, Dwain was most proud of his children and their kids and grandkids. He always greeted his visitors with a smile, a “Hey!” and the point of a crooked finger.

He is survived by his wife, Elinor; children and spouses/significant other, Ronile (Adam Pittman) Volwiler, Tammy (Doug) Tegler, Joy (Vince) Parkinson, and Darin Volwiler; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Lee Stoltenberg and Joyce Harmeier; siblings-in-law, Elaine Curtis, Les (Carol) Mitteis, and Jan Volwiler; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Dwain was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Ardis Volwiler; parents-in-law, Otto and Eunice Mitteis; siblings, Don Volwiler, Allan Volwiler, and JoAnn (Loren) Stoltenberg; siblings-in law, Jan Curtis, Don Harmeier, Arlene Volwiler, Dale Stoltenberg, and Lee (Barb) Mitteis; nephews, Rick Harmeier, Keith Volwiler, and Timothy Volwiler; and nieces, Vicki Fisher and Kelly Volwiler.

Dwain had a lifelong love of hunting and fishing, and after retirement, he was able to enjoy both. He became a dedicated member of Northeast Nebraska’s Two-Cylinder Club, restoring many John Deere tractors. Such was his love of anything John Deere that when the time came that he needed to use a walker, the only way his family could get him to use it was to paint it green and yellow. He loved farming and, in his retirement, he took great pride in farming his family land where he grew up.

To honor Dwain and his love of John Deere, feel free to wear something yellow or green to the services.
