Gordon J. Dennis, 88 of Laurel, died Wednesday May 5, 2010 at Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel. He was born April 26, 1922 at Butte, Nebraska the seventh of nine sons born to Jesse and Agnes (Clifton) Dennis. He attended Butte grade school and graduated Butte High School in 1939 at Butte, NE.
Gordon moved to Coleridge, NE in May of 1939 with his parents and brothers. He was employed at the Farmers Union Store where he met Verna Mae Munter, who became his bride on September 28, 1945 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge.
Prior to their marriage Gordon enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on August 4, 1942 at Los Angeles, CA he was assigned to the U.S.S. Everett and was a Quartermaster 2nd class serving in the North Pacific until receiving an honorable discharge on February 9, 1946.
He returned to Coleridge and he and his wife moved to Los Angeles, CA until November 1946 when the moved to Randolph, NE and joined his father in the Dennis Grain Elevator, later purchasing the Grain Elevator from his father. In 1969 he sold the elevator and built Randolph Fertilizer on highway 20, which he operated with Glenn Gubbels who became his partner and lifelong friend and confidant.
While living in Randolph 5 children were born to the marriage Daniel, Diane, Debra and twins Darlene and Darrell.
Gordon was active in both community and church. He served as Mayor of Randolph, was on the Randolph School Board, Randolph Community Club, V.F.W. was on the church council and building committee, a Sunday School Teacher and Luther League Sponsor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Randolph. He was 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge.
In 1969 Gordon and family moved to Sioux City, IA where he was employed as Area Manager for Terra Chemical Fertilizer until 1981 when he and family moved to Laurel, NE, built a new home and was Plant Manager of Terra Fertilizer at Wayne, NE until he retired in 1983. The family enjoyed extensive travels, Gordon enjoyed golf, was again active in V.F.W. and his membership at United Lutheran Church in Laurel.
Gordon was dearly loved and will be missed by his wife Verna Mae, 4 children, 14 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Verna Mae Dennis of Laurel; 4 children Son Dan and wife Deb Dennis of Fort Collins, CO, their children Chris Dennis and Jami and husband Joseph Hayes III and their son Noah; Daughter Diane Dennis of Menifee, CA and her daughter Mandy and husband Sheldon Llewllyn and their son Mykal; Daughter Debra and husband Keith Landwehr of Lincoln, NE and their sons Travis and Troy and daughter Trina and husband Jon Waller and their children Madelyn, Emma and Samuel; Daughter Darlene and husband Steve Mast of Denver, CO and their children Chris, Brian and Lauren; Daughter-In-Law Lynn Dennis of Cedar Rapids, IA and her children Daniel and wife Sophia Dennis and their daughter Abigail, Rachel, Sarah and Rebecca. Also surviving are Gordon's 3 brothers Jess and wife Sandra Dennis of Yankton, SD; Donald and wife Jessie Dennis of Inola, OK and Robert and wife Millie Dennis of Phoenix, AZ and many nieces, nephews. He will also be missed by many loyal friends.
Gordon was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Darrell Dennis; his parents, Jesse and Agnes Dennis, brothers Lewis, Kem, Paul, Frank and Cliff.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given for the Mission work of United Lutheran Church of Laurel, NE.
