Jim passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

A beloved husband, father, grandpop, brother, friend, and a pillar and caretaker of our community of Madison.

Jim was born May 30, 1959, to Jesse (Bud) and Mary Jane Lewis in Norfolk, NE. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1977. Jim graduated from Northeast Community College with a lineman degree in 1979 and began work at the City of Madison on May 21st of that year. Jim worked for the Utilities department for over 44 years.  Additionally, he was a volunteer with the Fire Department and a certified EMT on the Madison Rescue Unit. Serving the City of Madison was Jim's mission and for decades he kept the lights on and the streets plowed. Jim earned a reputation as selfless and giving, a humble and all-around great guy. He could be found helping strangers and friends at any time.

Jim married Jane (Ray) at the United Methodist church in Madison on June 12, 1981. They were blessed with four daughters and subsequently ten grandchildren. Family brought Jim the greatest joy in his life. Raising four daughters, Jim volunteered to lead youth sports organizations, coached softball, and helped to found the Madison youth wrestling program. He loved hosting Sunday supper for his family and spoiling his grandchildren.

With friends and in his spare time, Jim was an avid outdoorsman, hunting and fishing in Nebraska and abroad.

Jim is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jane; his daughters: Amie (Dale) Robertson of Kansas City, MO; Katie (Rob) Fite of Madison; Abbie (Colby) Freudenburg of Battle Creek; Kelsie (Preston) Smith of Tucson, AZ; and his beloved grandchildren: Braden, Cole, Brody, Emery, Rory, Lydia, Parker, Nora, Willa, and Alaina. He is also survived by his siblings: Shelia Lewis of Norfolk; Jerry (Sally) Lewis of Norfolk; Shelly (Rick) Adams of Norfolk; John Lewis of Norfolk; Joe (Karla) Lewis of Arpin, WI; and his sisters and brothers-in-laws Dave (Cheryl) Ray of Norfolk, and Jean (Steve) Bredehoft of Meadow Grove; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Susan Lewis; his mother and father-in-law, Burt Jr. and Mable Ray; brothers-in-law, Frank Ray and Stephen Ray; and sister-in-law, Judy Ray.

Jim was loved by many as "MIM", "Grandpop", and simply as Dad. His family hopes to continue his legacy by putting family first and never hesitating to lend a helping hand.
