Janice L. “Jan” DeWalt was born to Cleo Arthur Bramon and Verna Edna Muffly Funk Bramon in Norfolk, Nebraska. Her first breath on earth was drawn on June 28, 1937. Her first breath of heaven was drawn on April 27, 2026.
Jan received all of her primary and secondary education in Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk Senior High in 1955. After graduation from high school, Jan attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, for one semester. She subsequently moved to Oxnard, California to help her sister raise her young family while her husband (Jan’s brother-in-law) was serving in the US Navy.
When Jan’s assistance was no longer needed by her sister, she returned to Norfolk and, thereafter, moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to work at Ent Air Force base in a civilian clerical position. Jan missed her Norfolk home and family, so she returned to Norfolk and became employed at WJAG radio station. She then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to work at the Lincoln Air Force base in a civilian clerical position there as well.
During her time in Lincoln, she began dating the gentleman who would become her husband, Ira M. “Jim” DeWalt, Jr. That was 1964. On February 12, 1965, they married at First United Methodist Church in Norfolk, and Jan thus returned to Norfolk for good. Upon her return to Norfolk, she worked for the US Social Security Administration but resigned when she gave birth to her only child, a daughter, Jennifer. Thereafter, Jan was occupied full-time in the roles of wife and mother.
Jan was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She was an avid card player with a widely diverse social circle that kept her and Jim busy every weekend. She was a crocheter, making crocheted blankets for many family members and friends. She enjoyed collecting small glass, ceramic, or metal shoes of the home décor variety. She loved her family. She also loved traveling with her family. It was her life’s goal to travel with her husband and daughter to visit each state in the Union before her daughter graduated from high school: that lofty goal was achieved but for one state, Alaska. Thereafter, she and Jim continued to travel and added foreign locations among their destinations. Ireland was their favorite of all the destinations that they visited.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer DeWalt (Gene Geihsler) of Norfolk; brother, Bob Bramon, of Norfolk; feline daughter, Moonie DeWalt, of Norfolk; grandkitties, Lily and Daisy DeWalt, of Norfolk; and many nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Duane Funk and Kenny Funk; one sister, Gayle Bramon-Beed; one brother-in-law, Bob Beed; three sisters-in-law, Barb Funk, Phil Funk, and Lucy Bramon; canine son, Maximillian Von Goddard DeWalt; feline daughter, Flannel DeWalt; cavy grandpig, Mrs. B. DeWalt; feline granddaughter, Fauna DeWalt; and grandkitties, Sebastian and Alexander DeWalt.
