Funeral services for Janice I. "Jan" Matthies, age 83, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Reverend Gretchen Enoch will officiate, with burial in Stanton Cemetery in Stanton, Nebraska.
The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.
Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue in Norfolk.

Jan died Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Faith Health in Norfolk.
Janice Irene “Jan” Matthies, daughter of Ronald and Margaret (Foster) Wiechelman, was born October 20, 1942, in Ainsworth, Nebraska. One of Jan’s favorite memories of early life was going to visit her grandparents, Clara and Walter Foster, on their ranch outside of Valentine, Nebraska and visiting many
cousins and relatives in the area. When Jan was around seven, her parents moved to Norfolk, Nebraska. Jan attended elementary schools in Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk Senior High School.
On May 20, 1960, she was united in marriage to Ervin Matthies at the courthouse in Yankton, South Dakota. They were blessed with four children, Bruce, Melody, Ronda, and Brian.
Jan worked numerous jobs and loved caring for her family and many people around her. She enjoyed numerous hobbies including crocheting, playing cards, bowling, and traveling with family and friends.
Jan returned to school and graduated as an LPN. She worked in nursing for over 20 years and loved caring for her patients. Her greatest joy was working in Labor & Delivery and the nursery.
She traveled to the Black Hills, Las Vegas, Memphis, Tennessee where she toured Graceland with her daughter Melody and husband Tom Binkerd. She was a huge fan of Elvis Presley. Jan enjoyed traveling to Michigan to visit her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jan is survived by her children, Ronda Matthies and Brian Matthies; son-in-law, Tom Binkerd; eight grandchildren, Candace Thompson, Jim Thompson, Dan Binkerd, Andrew Binkerd, Jennifer (Tony) Villella, Ryan (Genevieve) Matthies, Zachery Matthies, and Jessica Matthies; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Peggy (Daryl) Davids and Linda (Mike) Schneider; brother, Jack Wiechelman; and many cousins, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, son, Bruce; daughter, Melody Binkerd; two grandsons, Keith and Brandon Matthies; sisters, Shirley Donner and Alice Schultz; sister-in-law, Pat Wiechelman; and nephew, Brad Donner.
