Jeannine Benson Obituary

Memorial services for Jeannine Benson, age 88, of Norfolk, Nebraska may be held at a later date.

Jeannine (Jeanie) Yvonne Benson, age 88, of Norfolk, Nebraska passed away on January 15, 2024 at Heritage of Bel Air in Norfolk Nebraska.

Jeannine was born on July 2, 1934 in Valentine, Nebraska, the eldest child of Lester and Hazel (Swogger) Lamoureaux.

She grew up on the family ranch near Valentine.   Later she lived in Norfolk with her mom and siblings, and attended Norfolk High School.   She married Reynold Prokop and they lived on a farm near Pender with their daughter, Nancy.  Jeannine moved back to Norfolk after Reynold passed away in 1983.  Her second husband, Virgil Kinsey, passed away in 1995.  She married Bob Benson in Norfolk in 2012. They had enjoyed many years of companionship together before his passing in November of 2016.

Jeannine loved being outdoors and spent many hours going on walks and sitting outside swinging on her porch swing.  She liked to tend her little garden space where she had many solar lights, pinwheels, and flags (Go Big Red!) to keep it looking festive.  She was also a “collector” and her walls were covered with lots of treasured knickknacks that she collected over the years including salt and pepper shakers, cats, and teddy bears!  She was proud of her heritage as a member of the Rosebud Lakota Sioux tribe. Jeannine also liked to spend time at the FOE (Eagles) Club where she had many friends.  The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to a special friend, Kathy Kern. Jeanie had limited vision, and when Bob was no longer able to drive her, Kathy kindly drove her around for errands and even trips out of town. By handling many other chores as well, she enabled Jeanie to maintain the independence she valued so much. Kathy was truly an angel to Jeanie and was there for her to the very end.

Jeanie was a pistol and you didn’t really want to argue with her but she always had a very positive and matter of fact attitude.  She had a great sense of humor and wasn’t afraid to let you know what she was thinking but she also took a little teasing in stride, usually!  She will be missed.

Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, Bill, Bob, Jeff, and Richard (Dick) Lamoureaux, her half-brother, Stan Standley, and her 3 husbands.  She is survived by her sister Helen Lorraine Butterfield Hatfield of Apache Junction, Arizona, brother Steve Standley and wife Linda of Hamilton, Montana, her daughter Nancy (Randy) Lidberg of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.  Interment will be at a later date in Prospect Hill cemetery in Norfolk, Nebraska.
