Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph A. “Joe” Schmitz, age 73, of Madison, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at St. Leonard’s Catholic Church in Madison. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 35, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5763.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at the church.
Resseguie Funeral Home in Madison is in charge of arrangements.
Joe passed away Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
Joe A. Schmitz was born to Raymond K. and Adelaide (McGill) Schmitz on September 11, 1950. He attended St. Leonard’s grade school and graduated from Madison High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972, serving in Vietnam. He worked for the United States Post Office for over 30 years. Joe was a member of the American Legion and was the current commander of the VFW.
He is survived by his siblings, Timothy of Orchard, Ann O’Neill (Larry) of Columbus, Gerry (Jennifer) of Albion, and Rita Pavlik (Terry) of Verdigre; an uncle, Leonard Schmitz of Winsor, CO; an aunt, Sarah (Dick) McGill of Lake-in-the Hills, IL; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Adelaide Schmitz; and grandparents, August and Christina Schmitz, and Martin and Margaret McGill.
