LaVern Truby Obituary

LaVern Jefferson Truby, age 92 of Randolph, died Thursday August 6, 2015 at Osmond General Hospital. He was born on June 9, 1923 in Belden, NE the son of Melvin and Francis (Cleveland) Truby. He graduated from high school at age 16 in Corona, CA. He worked various jobs, until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on December 12, 1942. During his tour of duty, lasting three years, three months and three days, he served as Staff Sergeant, island hopping through the South Pacific, often crossing the equator. On October 4, 1945, LaVern married Ruth Ellen Collier at the United Methodist Church in Randolph. LaVern was honorably discharged in the winter of 1945. He and Ruth Ellen moved to Lincoln, NE where he studied agriculture at the University of Nebraska under the G.I. Bill. In 1946, the couple moved to Iowa, and welcomed their first two children, before returning to Nebraska to begin farming. They settled the Collier family farm, where they added three daughters to their family. After 50 years of farming, he retired in 2005.

LaVern was devoted to his family, church, community and conserving the land he farmed. He supported each of his five children through college, and found much joy in attending his children's and grandchildren's actives and events. He attended weekly services and bible studies at the United Methodist Church in Randolph, also serving as a board member and usher for many years. LaVern always enjoyed researching and implementing innovative techniques in farming, land conservation, and animal husbandry. He was recognized as a respected leader by his colleagues, being elected president of the Cedar County Conservation Committee. He served in that role for nine years. LaVern also served as the president of Cedar County National Farmers Organization (NFO), and was a member of the Small Farm Energy project. He was a longstanding member of V.F.W..

LaVern will be remembered for sharing his memories of the war with close friends and family, especially time spent on the island of Biak. He enjoyed a loving relationship with his beautiful bride of 70 years and will be greatly missed by his family.

LaVern is survived by his wife, Ruth Ellen Truby of Randolph; his son Tom and Laura Truby of Oregon City, OR; and his daughters, Mary and Eddy Smith of Miles City, MT; Sylvia and Jim Johnson of Omaha, NE; Patricia Truby of Scottsdale, AZ; Nancy and Jim Travnicek of Randolph; eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; a sister Gail Wiener of Le Mars, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
