Funeral services for Marcilene M. “Marcy” Coover, age 92, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2024, at Westridge United Methodist Church in Norfolk. Reverend Caitlin Bentzinger will officiate, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk.
Visitation will be May 16, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue, in Norfolk.
Marcy died Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Arbor Care Centers – Countryside in Madison, Nebraska.
Marcilene “Marcy” Coover was born April 5, 1932, at Bonesteel, South Dakota to Herman and Nettie (Krueger) Schroeder. Her family moved to Holt County, Nebraska and Marcy was educated in rural schools until age 11. She then attended Ewing High School and graduated in 1949. Marcy graduated from the Normal Training program and started teaching in Holt County in 1949.
On June 17, 1951, Marcy was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Coover at Ewing Methodist Church. They resided in rural Meadow Grove, Nebraska and she continued to teach in Madison County until Todd was born in 1958. Their daughter, Lisa, followed in 1962.
The family moved to a farm southwest of Norfolk in 1964 where they raised watermelons for 40 years. Later in life, Marcy became a paraprofessional teacher at Warnerville rural school in Madison County. Bob passed away in December 2015 after 64 years of marriage.
Marcy was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard and Dwight; one sister, Gloria Shipps; three sisters-in-law, Ethel Nichol, Evelyn Karas, and Elaine Lund; five brothers-in-law, Kenneth Coover, Art Coover, Jr., Vernard Coover, Lyle Coover, and Leonard Coover; as well as son-in-law, Dan Heitman.
She is survived by her son, Todd and Nancy (Unkel) Coover of Norfolk; daughter, Lisa Heitman of Norfolk; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law, Pat Coover, Lillyann Coover, Erika Coover, and Dorla Schroeder.
Marcy has been a member of the Methodist church for over 80 years. Her favorite bible passage is Joshua 25:15 – “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
