Mary Hicks Obituary
Mary Lue Hicks, 83, a retired nurse, died Thursday April 7 at the Skyline Retirement Community in Omaha. She had congestive heart failure.
She was born in Stanton, daughter of the late James R. and Vee Hicks. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1944, and after first attending Nebraska Wesleyan University, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Omaha's Nebraska Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. Her early professional experience included positions as assistant head nurse and head nurse at Methodist Hospital from 1949 to 1951 and head nurse at Stanford University Hospital, then located in San Francisco, from 1951 to 1956.
Miss Hicks spent six years in New York City, where she worked at Manhattan Veterans' Administration Hospital as head nurse and attended New York University, which granted her a master's degree in nursing in 1962.
From 1962 to 1982 she served Nebraska Methodist Hospital as assistant director, nursing service; director, nursing service; and vice president, nursing service. In 1967 she received the Nebraska Methodist Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Award and in 1975 the Nebraska Nurses Association, District 2, Professional Achievement Award.
After retirement Miss Hicks was involved in several volunteer activities, among them the American Red Cross Blood Donor program and the Nebraska Methodist Hospital. The Methodist Hospital Foundation honored her with the Heart and Dove Award for her volunteer work in 2009. She was active in the P.E.O. Sisterhood Omaha Chapter.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Obermeyer of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Shirley Minehart of Alexandria, Va.; a niece and three nephews; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.
