Melvin Wayne Kander, age 84 of Howells, died Wednesday November 1, 2017 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Melvin Wayne Kander was born September 16, 1933, in the Haymow Precinct in Stanton County the son of Michael and Adella (Belina) Kander. He was baptized October 22, 1933 and confirmed June 15, 1947 by Reverend Rudolf M. Norden at St. John's Lutheran Church rural Howells.
He attended grade school at Stanton County District #32 and graduated from Stanton High School in May 1951. Melvin was drafted into the United States Army July 30, 1953, stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on May 17, 1955.
On August 18, 1960 he married Pearl Siecke at Wayne. Melvin was the 3rd generation to farm the home place. The 100 year Aksarben Pioneer Award was presented in 1985. He was on the District #32 school board for several years, the Stanton Fair Board for 32 years and served as past Trustee and Secretary for Faith Lutheran Church in Stanton. Melvin had a strong work ethic and things were done on time. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, hunting and fishing, especially snagging spoonbill at Gavins Point, solving the daily Sudoku puzzle and going to farm sales.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Pearl Kander; their 3 Children Dennis and Diane Kander of Stanton; Susan and Tim Savage of Glen Cove, NY; Sharon and Phil Wandrey of Omaha; 9 Grandchildren Philip, Nicholas, Nathan and Andrew Kander; Mathew and Ciara Savage; Kirsten, Nicole and Rachel Wandrey; 1 Brother and Sister-In-Law Alvin and Viola Kander of Elkhorn; 2 Nephews Doug and Sandra Kander of Bennington and Mike Kander of Dorchester.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents.
