Mass of Christian Burial for Orville “Keith” Mewis, age 92, of Stanton, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Stanton. Reverend Vincent Germace will be celebrant, with burial in Stanton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church, with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service.
Home for Funerals-Stanton is in charge of arrangements.
Keith died Monday, March 30, 2026, at Stanton Health Center.
Orville “Keith” Mewis was born July 23, 1933, in Stanton County to Thurston Mewis. He attended country school at District 15 and graduated from Stanton High School. Keith married his high school sweetheart, Irene Prachyl on August 10, 1954.
Keith farmed in Stanton County but due to the economy he sold out and moved to Lexington, Nebraska to work at New Holland Manufacturing until the business closed. Keith then went to work for Dawson County as a mechanic. Keith had a passion for cocker spaniels. While living in Lexington, he raised registered cocker spaniels and loved each one of them as his own personal pet. They later moved back to Stanton to retire.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Mewis; children, Sharleen (Mark) Nathan, Elaine (Rudy) Rubenthaler, Randy (Deb) Mewis, and Mike Mewis; eleven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Janice Reese; and cousin, Sandy (Richard) Locke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Amanda Mewis; brother, Jim Mewis; sister, Jeanette Reese; brothers-in-law, Vernon and Lawrence Reese.
