Verona Wantoch Obituary

Verona V. (Buchholtz)Wantoch, our beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Norfolk.

Verona, the daughter of Irma (Krueger) Buchholtz and Robert Buchholtz, was born December 11, 1929, in the family farmhouse just outside of Weyauwega, Wisconsin. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. Verona attended high school at Dr. Martin Luther Academy in New Ulm, Minnesota. She went on to earn her teaching degree from Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota in 1950. Verona taught kindergarten through eighth grade, in a one room schoolhouse at Trinity Lutheran School in Hoskins, Nebraska.

On June 8, 1952, Verona married Otto Wantoch at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Weyauwega. They were blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Verona and Otto farmed in Wayne County where they raised feeder cattle and maintained a large poultry operation. Their land consisted of rolling hills of alfalfa, corn, soybeans, oats, and triticale. Verona was also employed by multiple generations of families in the Norfolk community. She was committed to keeping these families’ lives and households running smoothly.

Verona dedicated her time and talents to various organizations throughout her community. She enjoyed helping with Christmas preparations for the Good Neighbors. She also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, taking pride in helping families find their forever home. The Orphan Grain Train was the recipient of Verona's unwavering dedication for over 30 years.

Verona enjoyed traveling, baking cookies with her grandchildren, Sunday night cards with friends, and most of all, lending a helping hand to everyone.

She is survived by her children Paul of Hoskins, Joel and fiancée Jennifer Pineda of Norfolk, and Mary Lamm and fiancé Jeff McLean of Norfolk; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Hahn of Waupaca, Wisconsin and Beatrice Broehm of Appleton, Wisconsin.

Verona was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Harold; daughter-in-law, Sharon; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
