Wendell Anton Fossum was born February 25, 1951, to Anton and Mildred (Arneson) Fossum in Sisseton, South Dakota. He graduated from high school in New Effington, South Dakota and continued on to Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he met his wife, Ethelyn Danielson. They were blessed with two children. After graduation, Wendell taught in South Dakota. In 1976, the Fossums moved to Norfolk where he would teach orchestra. After retiring from teaching, he obtained his insurance license, opening his office in 1995.
Wendell was a talented musician. He learned the violin early in life and went on to become a multi-instrumentalist. However, his true musical love was the upright bass. Wendell loved traveling and was always ready to try a new adventure. He enjoyed hiking, bike riding, attending sporting events, plays, concerts, and country dancing.
Most of all, Wendell loved his family. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, and found joy in supporting them, whether it be sports, music, or the arts. He will be remembered as a dedicated teacher and businessman, and for his generous, caring spirit.
Wendell is survived by his wife, Ethelyn; children, Maria (Ryan) Cadwallader of Rapid City, South Dakota and Eric (Melinda) Fossum of Norfolk; grandchildren, Jakob and Brooke Cadwallader and Hope, Harper, and Hadley Fossum; sister, Amy (Ken) Hauschild of Anoka, Minnesota; and brother-in-law, David Danielson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
