Wilbur Gemelke Obituary

Wilbur Dean Gemelke, age 88 of Stanton, died Thursday August 20, 2015 at Stanton Health Center in Stanton. He was born March 30, 1927 in Wakefield, Nebraska the son of Louis and Ruby (Wood) Gemelke. He attended Stanton Public School until family moved to Minnesota when he was 12 years old; attended Russell High School at Russell, Minnesota. He entered the United States Army on November 18, 1945 during World War II serving until honorable discharge on April 8, 1947. During the Korean War he entered the United States Army on January 12, 1951 and served until he was honorably discharged on January 11, 1954.

On December 22, 1951 Wilbur was united in marriage to Ina Pearl Smith at the United Methodist Parsonage in Stanton. The couple worked at Norfolk Regional Center and he was employed as a Psychiatric Technician II from 1956 until he retired in 1992. Wilbur was a member of United Methodist Church; former member of United Methodist Men; member of V.F.W. Post #3602 of Stanton. Granted a G.E.D. in a Veterans Day Ceremony, Certificate from State of Nebraska Department of Education bestowed to all World War II Veterans that did not receive a high school diploma. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, loved his dogs and Nebraska football and anything football.

Surviving him is his wife of 63 years, Ina Gemelke of Stanton; 2 daughters Laura and Terry Hess of Stanton; Cindy and Walter Retzlaff of Manhattan, KS; 5 Grandchildren Keri Hess of Lincoln; Kory and Robyn Hess of Norfolk; Kody and Brooke Hess of Stanton; Jeremy DeWitt and Justin DeWitt of Norfolk; 10 Great Grandchildren Cadence and Nicole Hess of Norfolk; Haley, Maya and Kaleb Hess of Stanton; Jaid and Joe DeWitt of Troy, KS; Timothy DeWitt and Elijah DeWitt of Norfolk; Paige DeWitt of Omaha.

Wilbur is preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
